II. Our response to God’s mission

1.  God´s “master plan” of salvation

God has a divine plan for the salvation of all people. It runs like a red tread throughout the OT and NT. Paul describes this 「master plan」 of God in Eph. 3:9 as 「being a mystery hidden for ages and now being made known by the Holy Spirit.」This mystery, this 「master plan」 of God, is His mission and will that all people, not only Jews, are to be called to the Kingdom of God.

This is uniquely revealed in the sending of Jesus, God’s Only Son, as the Saviour of the world. His resurrection was, and still is, the final victory over sin, death and the evil powers of Satan. The life, work, suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus reveal God´s unconditional love for the whole humankind. Therefore, the Good News of salvation in Jesus Christ is to be proclaimed to everybody. Faith in Jesus, faith alone, is the way to God. There are no other ways to God, only Jesus(John 14:5). The purpose of God´s mission is to proclaim the Gospel of salvation in a way that it invites people to accept Jesus as their personal Saviour.

2. Challenged to commit to God´s mission

Mission is God´s mandate to His people to participate in His continuing saving work. The first followers of Jesus were sent out to the world to be witnesses to Jesus in the same manner as Jesus was sent out by God(John 20:21).

Similarly, today´s followers of Jesus are called and chosen to carry out the divine plan of God for the salvation of men. God calls us to proclaim His love and salvation in Jesus Christ among peoples of nations. Two thirds of the world´s population has not yet heard the Gospel message. God´s mission, our mission, is still an unfinished mission.

Mission is of the very being, the very nature, of the Christian Church. To be committed to mission is not optional for the Church. The Church does not live for its own self, but for God and for the world. To be sure, Christians have many duties, but these duties must not be substituted for proclaiming the gospel and discipling people. God is concerned with the salvation of all sinners at the cost of his Son. This should be our concern as well. As followers of Jesus Christ, we are the Church. Mission is not a voluntary affair, or an activity of those who interested in it. It is obedience to our Master´s command.

3. Our commitment to God´s mission is our response to what He has done for us in Christ.

A commitment to God´s mission requires that you abandon your own agenda and accept God´s agenda for your life. This is never an easy thing! It may mean that you yield your rights, dreams, plans, and ambitions to Him. It is like handing out to God a blank sheet of paper with your signature at the bottom of it, and telling Him to fill it in details! This new way of life leads no longer living for himself but only for the Lord who died and was raised to life for our sake (2Cor 5:15). Committing to God´s mission is a very costly commitment. But it is a commitment along which you will experience the fulfillment of your life and the blessing of God in a way you could have never imagined!

Our commitment to God´s mission depends on the work of the Holy Spirit in us. Only Holy Spirit can make real both the salvation offered to us in Christ, and the missionary mandate given to us. When Jesus gave to his disciples the commission to make all nations his disciples, the disciples were not allowed to start the job assigned for them right away (Acts 1:4). Only after the Holy Spirit came upon them they were transformed into witnesses of Jesus.

The same is true also with our commitment to God´s mission. Our obedience to the task given to us, our willingness to offer ourselves to Christ for the sake of Gospel - all this is made real by the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. The Word of God, inspired by the Holy Spirit creates in us the will to participate in God´s mission. True and lasting commitment to God´s mission is always a result of spiritual renewal in us. That are we called to pray for.

4. Conclusion.

God wills and desires his Church to grow. The followers of Jesus are sent to continue God´s mission. The task is still unfinished. This fact of the unfinished task is to be taken seriously and emphasized again and again. Yet, God never forces any one of us, on the contrary, he tenderly invites us to give ourselves wholeheartedly into the world´s most fascinating movement, His mission. Though the task is immense and reaching out to all people with the Gospel looks almost impossible, the followers of Jesus see the vision of all nations coming to the New Jerusalem (Rev 7:9), vision of every knee bent before the King (Phil 2:10).

Our commitment to God´s mission is our response to what He has done for us in Christ.
